Students from the English Literature Department 22 B at Bangka Belitung Unversity attended Seminar on preparing a regional language dictionary for the Bangka Belitung Islands. Tuesday May 07th, 2024
Katakata.id – Students majoring in English Literature class 22SIB Bangka Belitung University are conducting a seminar with the Head of the Bangka Belitung Islands Language Office named Muhammad Irsan, S.S., M.Hum which will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 13.30 which is located in the Seminar Room of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Babel I Building.
This visit was carried out by students majoring in English Literature Class 22 class B under the guidance of Mr. Rizky Arif Afandi, M.A. in fulfilling the 4th semester Morphology & Syntax course with the aim of introducing lexicography in the preparation of regional language dictionaries that have two types, namely monolingual and bilingual. The description conducted by Mr. Irsan shows several studies that use the understanding of morphology based on what has been taught by Mr. Rizky in the course. So, students majoring in English Literature 22 class B just need to understand what has been described by Mr. Irsan in this seminar.
The purpose of this discussion is to direct this regional language dictionary to become a local content subject in Bangka Belitung island schools that supports the understanding of students who learn languages in all schools. Currently, language and literature are the government’s concern in the development, strengthening diplomacy towards culture and the development of Indonesian and literature. So the use of language, especially regional languages that exist in each region at this time in the Bangka Belitung region, is the main key in preserving the characteristics of each regional language diversity.

“The language in Bangka is almost extinct because it is not recorded at the Bangka Belitung Language Office and not preserved from the successor speakers of the original language,” said Mr. Irsan. Therefore, the Bangka Belitung Islands Language Office created five language protection programs, especially the Bangka Belitung regional language. First, mapping language and literature such as grouping languages, especially areas that are prone to extinction so that they can be used as sustainable protection. Second, vitalist studies that aim to determine the status of a language and literature based on categories that are in accordance with what is studied. Third, the conservation of language and literature that composes phonological, morphological, syntactic, and orthographic systems that make it to be realized in the conservation of oral, print, and manuscript literature. Fourth, revitalization of language and literature in classical learning to compile linguistic and literary materials that can be preserved. After that, the fifth, maps and registrations in the form of applications for registration of mapping results, studies, vitality, conservation, revitalization, and language study results according to certain regional categories.
After that, Mr. Irsan also said that “The number of Bangka words I found was 2300 words, and 2500 for the Belitung Malay type,” he said in his presentation to students majoring in this class. Related to that, he also added about the dictionary structure in the form of macrostructure and microstructure. This macrostructure includes the overall principles of a dictionary, including guidelines for the use of the dictionary. While microstructure includes lemmas, pronunciation, word classes, context, usage examples and others.
In order to make the forum a two-way street, Mr. Irsan asked two questions, namely, “What are inflectional and derivational along with their example?” and “What is the corrrect procedures for compiling an monolingual and bilingual dictionary?”. He asked two questions. Two students named Tsasa and Geoiry answered his questions. Tsasa answered the first question, that Inflectional is a word change that does not change the word class. For example; go, went, gone whose usage changes with the use of tenses. Derivational is a word change that also affects the word class. For example: guitar (noun), guitarist (noun) which are the same word class but have different meanings.
Then, related to the procedure for compiling monolingual and bilingual dictionary, Geoiry answered for procedures of monolingual dictionary, “First it starts with the word, numbering (if it has synonyms), word class, synonym: example sentence.” He answered. After that Geoiry also added the procedures for compiling a dictionary with Bilingual as follows “Word, word class, definition: example sentences” He said. After answering questions from Mr Irsan, the two students were rewarded with a dictionary of Bangka Malay and Belitung Malay, to appreciate their active participation in the seminar.

After giving material related to lexicographs, Mr. Irsan gave the opportunity to the students to ask questions, and also gave questions so that the forum was not only one-way. There were two students who asked Mr. Irsan, namely, Geoiry Liantoro and Naufaldy Dwi Nugraha. Geoiry asked “How is the influence of the rhetorical philosophy system of loghos, ethos, and pathos in the formation of this regional language dictionary?” After that Mr. Irsan gave an answer that “The essence of the preparation of this regional language dictionary is concerned with the preservation of the characteristics of the language used in each region that must be maintained, and maintain it by making a dictionary designed by the language office.” He said meaningfully.
Naufaldy also asked a question to Mr. Irsan, he said “How to verify the spoken or written words that we use?” Mr. Irsan also answered “First, we must verify the speaker’s origin or region of origin, then, pay attention to the speaker’s mouth when communicating with the language used by people when speaking and pay close attention to the pronunciation.” He answered.
It can be concluded from this seminar that the preparation of language dictionaries requires a good understanding of morphology in order to produce dictionaries that are easily understood by readers. Dictionary compilers must also pay attention to lexicography, which is an activity that helps make the compilation more theoretical and practical. In addition, dictionary compilers must also know the meaning of each word that will be entered in the dictionary of their respective local languages.

It is hoped that after this seminar students, especially English students, can get the essence of the learning that has been done with Mr. Irsan, and students can implement or apply material about this Lexicography. After that, English literature students can understand the relationship of this material with the Morphology and Syntax course. Therefore, students must increase literacy about the preparation of regional language dictionaries and their relation to morphology. (Rls)
